Who are the Ruling Elders in the Presbyterian Church?
According to the Presbyterian Church USA Book of Order, ruling elders are church members elected by the congregation, “of wisdom and maturity of faith, having demonstrated skills in leadership and being compassionate in spirit. Ruling elders, together with the pastors, exercise leadership, government, spiritual discernment, and discipline, and have responsibilities for the life of a congregation as well as the whole church, including ecumenical relationships.” This board of elders is called The Session.
